Tips for Success:
- We highly encourage all participants and their families to follow proper social distancing procedures provided by the state of North Carolina. For more information, visit
- Picking a spot to draw:
- We recommend that you create your work in your driveway or other paved surface at your home. If you don't have access to any pavement, reach out to friends and family and see if they have a spot where you could work, or look for a park or other public place.
- Consider the surroundings and how they will affect the pictures (see below for more)
- Think about the foot traffic of the area
- To take the best pictures of your work, we recommend:
- Get up high to shoot your photo, looking down
- Photos may come out better on a bright overcast day instead of a sunny day
- Remember to look at shadows that may overlap your work
- Avoid drawing in a place that is too bright or poorly lit
- Do NOT use a flash
- If your piece is particularly large, consider how you can show that scale in the final photo so it’s clear to the viewer
- Plan ahead for weather
- Watch out for rain
- Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, hats, tents, etc.
- Create your design ahead of time so you are ready to go when you start your work
